This year, all things SUP and Kayak Fishing

Our slower, winter season gives us an oppourtunity to take a little time off for traveling (in this years case, did some work around our house) and plan for the upcoming, busy season.

This year our focus will continue to be Stand Up Paddling (SUP) and Kayak Fishing.  We will do this through the product clinics we provide, the events we attend and the various folks, in the community we support.  Along the way, we will share with you our own SUP and kayak fishing adventures.

For SUP this year, we have a number of great events on the calendar and I am sure there will be one near you in, Calgary, Vernon, Castlegar/Nelson, Vancouver, Deep Cove, Chilliwack and Sechelt. Watch our blog for more details.

On the Slocan River in Mike Darbyshire's River SUP clinic

We are excited to support the Eastslope Kayak Fishing Classic in June and although we will not be there in person, our brands have stepped up, yet again.  Both, Kokatat and Werner Paddles have been supporting this event since the beginning and count kayak fishing as one of their fastest growing categories, in recent years.  Sign up today for the Eastslope Kayak Fishing Classic.  If you are one of the first 10 people to register you will receive a Werner Paddles 50th anniversary prize pack.

If you are an avid kayak angler who has a strong and growing following on line and on-the-water, get in touch with us.  We are always looking for folks to join our team.

One Fishing Adventure After Another

If you are dreaming of some kayak fishing in 2015 take a look back at the 2014 fishing season of Nikki Rekman Sales and Kokatat Regional Paddler, Laura Demers.  If you want some kayak fishing advice you can also contact Laura at Western Canoeing and Kayaking in Abbotsford, BC where she is the in-house kayak fishing and SUP expert.

Ross Lake
In mid July I came across the opportunity to go fly fishing in the backcountry west of Quesnel, BC on the Blackwater River. The special invite from Marlin, my boss along with good company from friends couldn’t be turned down.  This was going to be the first time I ever went fly fishing.

The Cabin
The trip took a downward turn before we even left home when we found out that there was a forest fire burning fairly close to where we had planned to go.  We decided to make the most of it and go anyways, although not to our original destination.  We came up with some alternative fishing options and set forth on one adventure after another.

For our first adventure we loaded up our Clipper Tripper and Tripper-S canoes for a trip down the nearby Euchiniko River. I geared up with my Kokatat Orbit Tour PFD, can’t live without it. We bumped, dragged and portaged down the shallow river only to catch a few squawfish.  It did give me a chance to work on my cast while I only snagged a few trees ;)

I'm pretty sure I wore my Kokatat Wool Core for a total of
7 Days and no one even noticed because unbelievably it
smelt great!

The next adventure was to tackle a section of the Blackwater River where the fishing was supposed to be better.  This time only three of us went and so I spent a decent amount of time soloing the Tripper-S while dragging a fly behind.  Then, bang I caught my first ever trout.  Landed it in the boat...didn’t use a net...I’m sure you know what happened next.  My first ever trout hoped and bounced itself right back to where it came from!

First moose I've ever seen!  She sat there just long enough for
me to get out the SLR camera from my Overboard Dry bag.
Alas the fish.  We were there for 5 days and on the first day Marlin let us know about a fishing whole on a creek with no name.  My friend Sandra and I ended up going there day after day and being successful after everything else failed.

And for the final adventure.  As we drove home a couple days early Sandra and I decided we just hadn’t had enough.  We arrived in Abbotsford after nearly 8 hours of driving only to re-pack our gear, load up our kayaks and drive 2.5 hours in the middle of the night back the direction we just came from to Ross Lake and the Skagit river.  With only 3 hours of sleep we awoke early to get to the fishing and the fishing was good!

1st Trout on

Here’s to the best job ever for letting me enjoy my adventures!

Just in from Salt Lake City...Jackson Kayak Fishing 2015

It's great to have awesome folks on the ground at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City so we can give you this awesome Sneak Peek at the 2015 Jackson Kayak Fishing line up.  Huge kudos to Product Manager, Damon Bungard and Jameson Redding.

We are super excited about all the new fishing kayaks but particularly the Kraken designed for offshore kayak fishing, perfect for the coastlines of Canada!

Top overview of the Kraken

What is the difference between the Jackson Kayak Cuda 14 and the Kraken?  Answer by the Kraken's designer, Jim Sammons.

The Cuda is 14'3" 30.5" wide the Kraken 15'6" long 29.5 wide. These dimensions alone will give the Kraken much better glide. In the Prototype the difference was remarkable. It was no effort to keep a pace of over 4mph per the GPS on the Kraken while the Cuda was close to 3 or less when chop present.

The Kraken has more rocker and more flare in the bow for better lift in surf and chop.
There won't be a stand assist strap on the Kraken, I am sure some guys will still be standing in it but that is not what it was made for.

The Kraken comes with the new KKrate which is secured into the tankwell via track. This Kkrate and the new bait pump scupper will make a great live bait solution for those using live bait.

Adjustable trim seat is a game changer for those with a full bait tank at the rear or full fish bag in the bow.
The new hinged and angled center hatch will make interior access much easier for storing fish or your rods.

Closer view of the top of the Kraken

Bow of the Kraken

Bottom of the Kraken -
The transducer scupper is just behind the center hatch so you get very good water contact at all times,. This also makes it easy to run wires though the side of the center hatch area to the battery holder or head unit. You can see the transducer scupper in this bottom shot of the kraken.

More to come over the next few days and weeks.

Werner Paddles - Fishing Paddles - Which One Is For You?

Fishing paddles-Blade shape and paddling style.

Simply put, if you focus on a paddle that fits you it will means less fatigue, more time on the water and more fish in the boat.  A lot goes into a great paddling paddle and each manufacture will happily tell their story, so do your research, try stuff out and make an informed decision.
However the constant between all brands is that you are going to see 2 general blade shapes.  They will differ some, but generally you’ll have short and fat or long and skinny.   Each shape is designed specifically to perform better with your paddling style.  Now sure you can use any blade, paddle however you want, but to get the most from your paddling matching a blade shape to your paddling style.  Let’s take a closer look.

Long and Skinny.

This shape is for “Low-Angle” paddling.  In this style your top hand is shoulder height during your stroke, and much more relaxed as it puts less pressure on your smaller muscle groups.  This allows you to spend more time focusing on landing fish.  Try for yourself and see how the longer, narrow blade shape “fits” in the water better and presents more surface area of the blade to the water.   Now the disadvantage is that with every stroke the blades travel away from the side of the boat, making the boat turn slightly as you travel across the water.  Less of straight line means more time to get from point A to B.

Short and Fat.
When high angle paddling, your top hand will come up to about forehead height.  Notice that your blades travel much closer to the kayak helping you to track significantly straighter.  Again note that the short and wide blade shape “fits” in the water better in this position.   It can be harder on the smaller muscle groups, but as you commit to perfecting your paddling technique, it will allow you to be a more efficient paddler.   The common misconception is the fatter blade is faster, more powerful.  Generally the blades are the same overall size and again the shape difference is to match style.  To truly become more powerful, faster, work on technique.   Here is a great, short, video for the kayak angler and their forward stroke.

Still not sure what paddling style is best suited for you? Ask yourself, “What do I see myself doing the most out there?” If your answer is to get out there, relax and maybe catch a few fish, low angle would be the way to go. If your answer is to get out in the water and focus on better technique for more efficient paddling, high angle would be the ticket for you.   You can always get out there and try paddles out.  The day you become a kayak fisherman, you have to think like a paddler first.  Consider your paddle fit as much as you would consider any of your tackle.
Don’t forget, a bad day of fishing is still a great day of paddling.
